MURAL IN CROONER'S LOUNGE

CHILDREN'S MURAL FOR PLAYROOM

LIBERTY THEATER....FORT SCOTT, KANSAS
2009
These two murals were in bad, bad shape. They had been painted on plaster walls in the 1930s (or so we were told. by George Keefer.Over the years the outside walls of brick, had never been tuckpointed and moisture came through all the way to in murals. The ceiling also had leaks that caused more damage. They measured 14' x 40' each.
There was almost half of the town mural that , when tapped, totally fell off all the way to the outside bricks and had to be totally replastered before work could continue.
There were 100s of large holes and rotten plaster that all had to be repaired, which cause us to have to repaint large area from scratch.
The paintings had been hidden by two false ceilings and tons of dust and dirt. If we wouldn't have worked on them this year, they would have surely fallen into 100s of pieces onto the theater floor. Sections of non-muraled wall had done that already.
This wasn't a restoration order, it was emergency rescue-restoration. It seems that some years ago someone tried to "fix" cloud areas, and officers and horses. They just painted flat paint, no shading or shapes as if painting a solid wall. They were done with no knowledge of man or horse anatomy. They were '"fixed" because the wall was crumbling then also, but they just painted over the rotting walls.
So, all and all, it was a major project, which, in the end looked great.
